Whenever I’m in the mood for a quick weekend away, or a staycation, a trip to Vancouver is on my agenda.

For those of us who travel over from Vancouver Island we can easily hop on a plane thanks to Pacific Coastal Airlines and Harbour Air service to either YVR, and the free shuttle to The Canada Line, or direct to Vancouver harbour and the opposite end of The Canada Line at Waterfront Station.

Once there it is a quick ride to Yaletown and the Opus Hotel. The Opus Hotel is a modern, boutique hotel that has been completely renovated. The rooms are spacious with huge windows and lots of amenities.

For guests who take The Canada Line the Yaletown Station couldn’t be more convenient and the bell staff at Opus Hotel will run across the street and grab your luggage. Such great service!

Make reservations for dinner at La Pentola the great Italian restaurant partnered with La Quercia. For something more casual you will find numerous restaurants in the Yaletown neighbourhood just a short walk away. Why not try the Keg with their top floor open air patio, or Yaletown Brewery for a burger and beer. Wherever you choose to dine you will find lots of choices.

After dinner relax in the Opus funky lounge. Order one of their specialty cocktails and just spend the evening watching the world go by.

Enjoy!

The Canada Line is not just for commuters slogging to and from work, nor is it only for travelers making their way to and from the airport; it’s a great way to explore our wonderful city! The Canada Line is also a fun way for visitors to spend a day (or more) getting to know Vancouver.

For anyone traveling from one of British Columbia’s rural communities or Vancouver Island to Vancouver by air, start your day with Pacific Coastal Airlines. Did you know that Pacific Coastal Airlines flies to 65 locations within BC which means you can get to YVR from almost anywhere (wheeled & float aircraft)! From Anahim Lake to Williams Lake and many more communities in between Pacific Coastal makes the trip a breeze. Once you arrive at the South Terminal you board the free shuttle to YVR and The Canada Line. Other options include Helijet and Harbour Air to Vancouver Harbour steps away from The Canada Line Waterfront station.

Only have one day to spend in Vancouver? Not a problem, for example, leaving from Victoria Airport the first flight departs at 6:45 a.m. and arrives 7:10 a.m., last flight home departs at 20:00. That gives you 12 hours to spend in our fair city.

I suggest buying a daily pass for The Canada Line. You will want to hop on and hop off at many of the stations on the line. (*)

Be sure to check out The Canada Line website www.thecanadaline.com when you are putting together your itinerary for a day in Vancouver. The website is full of helpful information such as a Station Maps, listing shops, stores, and businesses you will find at any given stop on the Line. There is almost always something happening on the Line so check out the Events for entertainers, plays, musical performances, and more. One of my favourite things to do on the Line is view the art installations on temporary exhibit at The Canada Line stations, Art on the Line has all you need to know to plan your very own art tour.

Each The Canada Line station has it’s own unique points of interest. Each of these communities have something special to offer the visitor or traveler. The stations of The Canada Line are lively, exciting and above all welcoming. When on the Line you can visit art galleries and museums, take a walk in a nearby park, attend a sports event, shop till you drop from an eclectic mix of shops and stores for all tastes and budgets, explore a local night market or a Saturday farmer’s market featuring home grown produce, or the casino where an array of entertainers and games of opportunity await.

InTransit BC’s Canada Line Public Art Program supports emerging and established artists by providing space for public art in highly visible locations along the Canada Line route in Vancouver. The exhibit themes and types of media are very broad, featuring photography, sculpture, text based artwork and posters in nine stops along the Line, and often feature the work of artists from Emily Carr, the UBC Art Department, and Langara College.

Public art creates eye catching conversation pieces about the culture of this region as we move through our city on Transit. Jim Breukelman’s piece collaborates with the City of Vancouver’s Public Art Program, where they are able to exhibit local, national and international established artists.

Salmon are a captivating feature of British Columbia’s coastal wildlife, and Fish Ladder sets side by side the movement of salmon with people as they travel through the environment. Similar to a fish ladder, which guides the turbulent movement of salmon through the Capilano River Hatchery, people are funneled up and down the escalators to their destinations along the Canada Line.

“What I find uplifting about these images is that, even though these creatures are being controlled, funnelled through a man-made environment, they retain their aura of wildness,” Breukelman says. “In spite of the knowledge base we have amassed about salmon, there are still important aspects of their life that remain unknown. For me, that is the beauty of wildness and wilderness….its potential for surprise and conjecture.”

Jim Breukelman’s installation will be on display at the Vancouver City Centre Station March through September 2013.

Last week was the launch of Raymond Boisjoly’s public art project As It Comes at the Yaletown Roundhouse Station. The response was immediate. The moment the vibrant and somewhat sickly green layer of vinyl was being applied over the more subtle yet still strident apricot, people started commenting. The first comment was from a group of young men who all agreed it was a “sick sign.” The comment made us laugh it seemed so apt. And the next remark was from an older woman who poetically said, “We live in a world where everything is great, but nobody knows what it means.”

There is certainly a lot of meaning behind this simple phrase that is linked to Raymond’s exhibition in the windows of the Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG) – about a ten minute walk from the station. It starts with literature, specifically autobiographies of North American indigenous peoples. As it Comes is a title and the entry point into a complex story that looks at how histories are told. Please visit the CAG to experience more of Raymond’s work and to see what As It Comes titles.

Whether you visit the CAG or not, experiencing Raymond’s mural at the Yaletown Station on its own still has a particular impact and carries many interpretations. Another passer-by summed it up nicely saying, “there is so much information out there and we encounter it as it comes.” But I hope you visit the gallery. It is free and so close to The Canada Line.

Everybody who loves perfume should experience The Perfume Shoppe in Sinclair Centre! Not only do they carry an extraordinary selection of perfumes from all over the world as well as hard to find Niche Perfumes for both men and women, but the owner, Nazrin, and her expert staff (Robyn) will help you find the scent that is perfect for you!

When I first went to The Perfume Shoppe, I discovered immediately that there is so much more to choosing a perfume than how it smells in the bottle or on somebody else. I learned that there are very specific factors that make my individual body chemistry as unique to me as my fingerprint and Robyn (Nazrin was away this day) knew exactly how to decipher the “fragrance code” on my skin! She asked questions about my preferences and gave me samples to sniff until I had settled on my two favourites (she narrowed it down in only 5 tries!) which I then tested, one on each wrist. I absolutely fell in LOVE with Serge Lutens Sa Majeste La Rose’ …and I believe it fell in love with me, too!

As Valentine’s Day fast approaches, surprise your Sweetie with a visit to The Perfume Shoppe and discover the perfect scent for you both…who knows what passions will be ignited (or re-ignited)!

The Canada Line Public Art Program is about to launch its next public artwork at Yaletown-Roundhouse Station in partnership with the Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG), Vancouver. In anticipation of the interest in this piece (as with all public art it invites everyone’s opinion and interpretation) we offer a sneak peak and description of the work. It is our sincere desire that this artwork and all of the art presented in The Canada Line Public Art Program will (in the words of Nigel Prince, Executive Director of CAG) “cause us to reflect on, or view things in a slightly different way than we have done in the past. If it prompts one to be more expansive and open in one’s views and opinions, it’s a positive thing.”

As it Comes by Raymond Boisjoly is humorously foreboding and more comic than terrifying, the text is presented like a credit from a B-list horror film. Suggestive of a future always approaching, it acts as an entry point into the artist’s second colourful public art piece seen in the Contemporary Art Gallery’s window spaces.

For these two new public works Boisjoly quotes from three North American First Nations autobiographies: Black Elk Speaks, Yellow Wolf His Own Story and During My Time by Florence Edenshaw Davidson, the artist’s great grandmother. All of the books tell of the legislation of indigenous rights amidst the coming of modernity. Each is written as a personal account, despite being transcribed from interviews by and credited to Western authors. Boisjoly proposes these as emblematic of the many issues surrounding indigenous peoples, the differing authorship drawing our attention to the ongoing complexity of traditions, visibility and voices of First Nations in our contemporary society.

Raymond Boisjoly is an artist of Haida and Québécois descent from Chilliwack, BC, currently based in Vancouver. He has participated in numerous exhibitions including Beat Nation, Vancouver Art Gallery, (2012); Phantasmagoria, Presentation House Gallery, North Vancouver (2012); Tools for Conviviality, The Power Plant, Toronto (2012); Studies in Decay, OR Gallery, Vancouver (2011). Boisjoly received a Fleck Fellowship from the Banff Centre in 2010 and is represented by Catriona Jeffries Gallery, Vancouver.

Please join us on Thursday, February 7th at 7pm to 10pm at the Contemporary Art Gallery for an opening celebration. The artist will be in attendance.

What happens when you give art students the opportunity to collaboratively create art for a high-traffic public space, providing general specifications related only to size and site placement but no specific theme or curatorial advise? You are ALWAYS pleasantly surprised! That’s exactly what has happened once again at Langara College, as we prepare to install the second creation by the Public Art Program students in the Canada Line Public Art Program.

Last year we bolted a heavy-duty stainless steel 8′X8′ frame to the concrete wall at the north end of Langara-49th Avenue Station that was designed to accommodate 2-dimensional, sculptural and projection works of art and allow for easy (read: inexpensive) installation and removal. We were delighted with the first work of student art, Tread Lightly (see photo below)…it was a thoughtful, site-specific, well-build, inspiring piece that challenged the group of students to cooperate, collaborate and communicate their vision. Tread Lightly will be removed from Langara Station on January 28th, 2013, to make room for the new Public Art student creation so please check it out this week if you haven’t already.

The new work, Placebo 4.9 will explore ideas of lifestyle and coping mechanisms, routines and habits we create. Below is a ‘teaser’ photo…stay tuned!

From the short flying time to the ease and accessibility of the Canada Line, a shopping trip to the big city is as simple as checking in with Pacific Coastal.

By SUSAN LUNDY

On a bright, cheery day in September, I set out to prove that a day-trip to Vancouver for shopping can actually occur with out ferry angst, driving trauma or parking horror.

I discover there are many benefits to flying to the big city via Pacific Coastal Airlines, especially compared to undertaking the same trip via car and ferry. The ease and comparative cost should have shoppers thinking everything from Christmas gift-hunting to the (dreaded) pursuit of the Perfect Grad Dress. To top it off, the trip offers a nice change of shopping scenery.

(Although this story specifically documents a Victoria to Vancouver trip, one can also get 10-hours-plus in the city via a day trip from Powell River, Campbell River or Cranbrook; or, a five-to-six-hour stint flying from Williams Lake or Trail.)

At the outset, I must confess there’s some irony in the fact I’m writing a story about shopping. The verb “shop til you drop” strikes me with dread. I can think of many better ways to drop, such as “drink Corona til you drop;” but nevertheless, I’m determined to coax out my Inner Shopper. I’ve brought along my mother because . . . well, isn’t shopping supposed to be a mother-daughter kind of thing?

Our day begins at Victoria airport’s PCA desk at 9 a.m. (45 minutes before our flight) and concludes full circle at the same spot about 10 hours later, giving us approximately eight hours in the city. Had we chosen earlier and later PCA flights, we could have stretched it to 13 hours from take-off to touch-down.

Here is our day:

9:00 a.m. Third coffee in hand, wallet in purse, I’m ready to shop. As we get our boarding passes, the PCA ticket agent explains how to access the free shuttle bus on the other side. This will take us from PCA’s home base at the south terminal to the main terminal at YVR and, more importantly for our trip, the Canada Line to downtown Vancouver.

9:45 a.m. Flight leaves on time and as we zoom past a ferry lumbering through the ocean beneath us, I remember that my friend, Shari, is also going to Vancouver today and should be on that very boat. (As it happened, that particular ferry was overloaded and she had to wait two hours for the 11 a.m. Ultimately, she had less than half the number of hours we had in Vancouver that day.)

10:10 a.m. We arrive at YVR’s south terminal, walk through the building and directly onto the shuttle, which leaves two minutes later. (Even if we’d missed that shuttle, it runs every 20 minutes, so it wouldn’t have been a long wait for the next one.)

10:20 a.m. The shuttle drops us off at the main terminal and nearby Canada Line, and we get our train tickets ($8.75 includes a $5 airport surcharge).

10:40 a.m. We’re on the Canada Line zipping towards Waterfront Station. I’ve decided that in seeking my Inner Shopper, we should hit two of the largest malls in Vancouver: Metropolis in Metrotown (Burnaby) and Pacific Centre, downtown. With 165,646.6 square meters of retail space, Metropolis is the second largest enclosed mall in Canada (smaller only than the Edmonton Mall). Pacific Centre — in the news recently due to the pending arrival of Nordstrom, an upscale American shopping department — is eighth in size at 129,506.8 square metres.

11:19 a.m. Following a small, unplanned detour, we are now on the Millenium Line, heading to Metrotown Station. Although I had accessed Vancouver’s Translink website (www.translink.ca) ahead of time and carefully plotted our journey, I neglected to factor in the “conversation effect.” Therefore, deeply engaged in gab, we neglected to disembark at our station and were startled to feel the train lurge in the opposite direction. Never mind, we got off at the next stop, retraced our steps and made the transfer.

11:25 a.m. Now travelling above ground on the Sky Train, I’m enjoying the view and wondering what I’d be thinking about if I were a True Shopper. Would I be envisioning outfits and accessories? Calculating the interest payments on my VISA bill?

11:30 a.m. The train has halted right beside Science World and I’m clenching the seat, holding back on the urge to hop out for a few hours, while my mother carries on to Shopping World.

11:37 a.m. We arrive at Metropolis — a little under two hours from the time we took off from Victoria. In comparison, taking a ferry and driving through morning rush hour traffic to Burnaby, and then parking, would have taken closer to three hours and involved a lot of swearing.

11:45 a.m. I’ve decided that shoppers need sustenance, so first stop is the food court.

1:17 p.m. Back on the Sky Train, we’re heading for Granville Station, which, in approximately 15 minutes, will deliver us directly to Pacific Centre. My Inner Shopper remains undiscovered, and I haven’t made any purchases. Mom bought some shoes, and I at least tried on a pair and imagined buying them.

1:32 p.m. We arrive at the station, walk up a series of stairs, and cross the street to the mall. We have five hours left before our flight, and only about 30 minutes of that is travel time. I’m pretty sure this amounts to a “Shoppers’ Day Dream.” However, just across the street, I spot the Vancouver Art Gallery, and must push aside the longings of my Inner Art Lover.

2:45 p.m. After meandering through the mall, I realize a Shopper might want to visit funky Robson Street. So we wander around there for awhile, impressed with the number of places a Shopper could go, and besides all that, enjoying some remarkable people-watching opportunities.

5:00 p.m. Back on the Canada Line (easily accessed from the lower level of Pacific Centre), we’re amazed at how smoothly the day has gone, and how easy it all was.

In comparing the two modes of travel — flight and ferry — this what we discover:

Time: No contest. Compare a 20-minute flight to a 90-minute ferry ride, and then compare the ease and speed of train travel to the unpredictability and stress of vehicle travel. The flight option wins hands down.

Parking: Although Metropolis at Metrotown has over 8,000 free parking spots, one still has to find one, and parking time is limited to four hours. Pacific Centre has a parking lot underneath it at a cost of $3.25 per half hour. Again, no contest. No car, no parking.

Cost: If you go solo from Victoria, it’s actually less expensive to fly. Return flight is $118 plus tax, train tickets return amount to under $15. Driver and vehicle on BC Ferries, Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen, costs about $130 for a round trip, and then add gas and parking.

Parcels: Here is an advantage to a having a vehicle — a place to store and carry the many parcels a Shopper would purchase. The solution, we realized, is to take a suitcase or large bag on wheels. Problem solved.

Weather: Although we set out on a glorious fall day, we wondered how a day of Vancouver rain might impact the joyous excursion. In fact, it would have little impact at all, as we were inside or under cover the entire trip (excluding Robson Street).

All in all, it was a fine way to spend a day. And although I didn’t find my Inner Shopper, I did enjoy a Corona upon my return home.
